Cellphone App That Could Save Your Life

If you think you're having a heart attack, chances are you'll rush to the nearest hospital. But that could be a fatal mistake if the closest medical facility is not equipped to clear cardiac blockages.
Now, a new cellphone app finds the hospital closest to you that is best suited to handle the type of medical emergency you are facing, even if you're on vacation and halfway around the world. The Emergency Medical Center Locator (EMCL) for iPhones recommends which nearby facilities are best in six key areas of treatment: cardiac, trauma, stroke, eye, pediatric, and burns.
In the case of a heart attack, the app could mean the difference between life and death. According to researchers at the Duke Clinical Research Institute, heart patients who had to be transferred to a second hospital to clear artery blockages had more than double the mortality rate of those who received the procedure quickly. In fact, 75 percent of emergency rooms do not have round-the-clock resources to clear blockages, and only 1 in 10 patients are transferred to another hospital within the first critical 30 minutes of arrival following a heart attack.
Heart attack victims aren't the only patients whose outcomes rely on rapid treatment. A study reported in Stroke found that only 1 to 2 percent of stroke patients diagnosed with acute stroke receive thrombolytic therapy (using drugs to dissolve or break up clots), and the most common reason is they arrive at a hospital equipped to administer the therapy more than three hours after the onset of symptoms. A delay in transferring patients to a certified center reduced the number of patients who would have otherwise qualified the life-saving therapy by about 15 percent.
The EMCL app works in 101 countries and its database contains more than 2,400 facilities. The app only includes medical centers certified by the American College of Surgeons and the American College of Cardiology.
The Emergency Medical Center Locator app is free, and installing it on your iPhone is easy. First, click on the App Store icon on your phone and then type "EMCL" into the search function. After that, select install, enter your iTunes password and click on OK.
