Ginseng Cold Medicine Safe for Kids

An extract from the ginseng herb called COLD-fX shows promise as a child’s cold and flu remedy, according to a new study by the University of Alberta in Canada. Results of the double-blind study were published in Pediatrics, the journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

COLD-fX is a patented extract of North American ginseng, and it’s the most popular adult cold and flu remedy in Canada. It’s also recently been approved for use by adults in the United States. The study showed that COLD-fX is safe and well-tolerated by children, and the study helped determine proper dosages for kids. Large-scale clinical trials are planned for next year to try to find out how well the formulation actually works in treating pediatric colds and flu.

Both the U.S. and Canada are currently reviewing hundreds of children’s cold and cough medicines for safety and effectiveness. The Centers for Disease Control says that more than 7,000 kids under 12 are treated in the U.S. every year in emergency rooms because of reactions to cold and cough medicines.
