Men's Battle With Andropause

Andropause is the term for male menopause. Although andropause may start a little later — usually when men are in their 50s — it still wreaks havoc. Men suffer the effects of the loss of testosterone, their main hormone. (Men also produce estrogen and progesterone — both genders have all three sex hormones, although in different quantities.)

As men age, their lower testosterone levels can result in depression, an inability to build muscle, and a loss of strong erections and interest in sex. So for an andropausal man who suffers in silence, supplementing with testosterone is akin to saving his life and putting him back in the game to function as a contributing member of society who also is able to perform sexually.

I can’t tell you how often women come to see me complaining that their relationship with their husband is deteriorating because they don’t talk or have sex anymore. The fact is, men do not talk about sex, and when they lose their libido and their erections are no longer strong or long lasting, they crawl into their shells. It’s not really that he has lost interest in having sex or you; it’s that he is afraid he can no longer perform and he stops altogether.

If you understand what your man thinks and why he is behaving strangely, you can help correct the problem, and perhaps your marriage will survive without you becoming roommates. Women must understand that men are embarrassed and afraid to talk about these topics.

The best way to help is to bring up the topic, and to make sure the hormones are balanced and that he doesn’t suffer from heart disease, hypertension or other health problems that may worsen the situation. Once other medical problems are ruled out, testosterone supplementation can work miracles. Also, using testosterone with Viagra or Cialis often improves men’s confidence. The result is a man chasing you around the house again.
