Staring Down Cancer Fear

Spending time in fear waiting for a cancer diagnosis is not wise and cuts significantly into quality of life.

We know that conventional treatments are very harsh and often leave us sicker than the disease itself. Just think of the treatment options we are given once a diagnosis is made: surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, synthetic hormone therapy, biological therapy, and targeted therapy.

These options come with horrific side effects and rarely increase longevity, while they hike the risks of infections and possible death.

They unequivocally destroy quality of life, not just for patients but also for their families.

In the 40 years since President Nixon declared war on cancer, not much has occurred to improve outcomes for patients.

What we have successfully accomplished was the creation of a trillion-dollar industry of harsh treatments, expensive and poisonous medications, and a huge marketing machine serving primarily to scare the living daylights out of all of us about the possibility of having cancer and missing the diagnosis.

These are not desirable outcomes and certainly don’t solve the problem.

To keep a fear of cancer from taking over our lives, we have to change the way we think about it.

We would be much better off focusing on what we can do to prevent cancer from harming us and interfering with the wonderful life we can create for ourselves and our loved ones.

The idea is to stay healthy for as long as possible, rather than running from test to test, doctor to doctor, afraid we may miss a cancer that may potentially not even kill us if we aren’t afraid of it.
