Can Saw Palmetto Prevent Baldness?

By    |   Thursday, 13 Nov 2014 05:40 PM

Question: About 20 years ago, when I was in my early 40s, my urologist suggested I start taking saw palmetto for some prostate problems I was having. It seemed to help in that department, but I also noticed that my hair, which was thinning then, has remained thick. My brother, who's eight years younger than me, is completely bald on top. Is it possible the saw palmetto helped me keep my hair? I know some prostate drugs are also used to also treat baldness.

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

You simply drew the right genetic card. In other words you got lucky to not receive the same genes your brother did. It was not the saw palmetto that helped keep your thick hair as far as I can ascertain.

Propecia is useful for helping some men with male pattern baldness to regrow hair, in some cases completely. Propecia is slightly less than quarter-strength Proscar, but beware. I have had some very reliable patients report they do not get hair growth with using Proscar split into smaller doses, but had superlative results on Propecia.

Some drugs that boost prostate health can treat baldness, but saw palmetto isn't likely to help.
