Are There Natural Remedies for Osteoporosis?

By    |   Friday, 06 Mar 2015 10:58 AM

Question: I have just been diagnosed with osteoporosis. Is there anything I can do other than take medicine to build up my bone density?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

Osteoporosis is a bone-thinning disease that sets us up for fracture. Many times a cause can be found such as hypothyroidism, or calcium or vitamin D deficiency. Treating the underlying cause is one of the best ways to address it.

But increased activity and exercise also helps strengthen bone, while inactivity fosters osteoporosis. Stay physically active, and be sure to check your calcium and vitamin D levels.

Reduced sun exposure reduces the ability of our skin to make sufficient active vitamin D required for good bone and tissue health. You should discuss your calcium intake with your physician to be sure it is sufficient, and be sure no other medicines are aggravating your osteoporosis.
