Are My High Blood Pressure, Tinnitus Related?

By    |   Wednesday, 25 Feb 2015 10:32 AM

Question: I have high blood pressure and ringing in my ears. Is it possible they are related, and what can I do about the tinnitus (I take blood pressure medicine)?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

Tinnitus is the medical term for ringing in the ears. Hypertension is a silent disorder generally, but can have adverse effects on vessels and organ function. Tinnitus can occur as a side effect from some hypertension medications, but is rarely a direct effect of hypertension.

That said, uncontrolled hypertension can cause tinnitus in some cause. Tinnitus can also be caused by a number of conditions, some which involve the ear (middle, outer or inner ear), the nerves to the ear, the canal that allows the cranial nerve to reach the ear from the brain, the vessels adjacent to the ear.

Your best option here is to obtain an audiogram with air and bone conduction studies accompanied by SRT (speech reception threshold) test performed by a technician under the direction of an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist. You may also want to consider a consultation with an ENT specialist to be sure you do not have a reversible cause of tinnitus that has not been overlooked by your primary treating physician.
