Should I Take CoQ10 for Fitness?

By    |   Thursday, 30 Apr 2015 04:54 PM

Question: I take a statin with CoQ10 (100 milligrams) every day and am wondering if increasing my intake of CoQ10 would boost my fitness level?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

Your muscle stress from exercise will increase your levels of CPK — an enzyme found in the heart. CoQ10 is used to decrease muscle aches when on statins, and an increased dose to 200-300 milligrams of CoQ10 may make sense before strenuous exercise, such as running a marathon.

But you should consult your doctor first. It is quite common for doctors to recommend holding statin doses before major surgery during times of illness or extreme stress with the interruptions usually being for no longer than five to 10 days.
