Will Massage Help My Neck Pain?

Thursday, 08 Nov 2012 09:40 AM

Question: I have what I believe is a pinched nerve in my neck, with pain that shoots from my shoulder down my arm. Ibuprofen gives me some relief. Do you think massage would help?

Dr. Hibberd’s answer:

Cervical radiculopathy — the official term for neck pain from pressure on a nerve root — is usually diagnosed easily. A physical exam indicating loss of motor function or persistent pain or numbness may lead some doctors to recommend an MRI. But the large majority of patients with neck pain caused by disc problems will improve with conservative treatment alone, and massage is sometimes an appropriate part of physical therapy. Be sure to get your doctor’s approval for massage before starting it. Physical and occupational therapy is often recommended when immediate surgery is not required and poses little risk of spinal cord or nerve damage.
