How Can I Reduce My Belly Fat?

Monday, 16 Dec 2013 09:26 AM

Question: Is there anything I can do to reduce my belly fat? I’m not overweight, but have a pretty big beer belly. I’ve been told sit-ups won’t help. What do you think?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

Beer bellies in those who are not overweight generally come from simple lack of abdominal muscle tone.

Sit-ups are not the answer, except perhaps in your teens or early 20s. You need to engage in an overall aerobic exercise program to cut your belly fat.

See your doctor for medical clearance to be sure no abdominal problems are behind your belly fat. Once cleared, visit to your local health club, a swimming pool, YMCA, or gym for a fitness evaluation and consider working with a personal trainer to increase your abdominal muscle tone.

Aim to work up to exercising 30 minutes a day. And don't forget to eat a sensible, healthy diet and avoid excess alcohol (no more than two drinks per day).
