Iodine Levels and Cancer Risk

Monday, 29 Oct 2012 06:50 AM

Question: Why is there so much thyroid cancer right now?

Dr. Brownstein's Answer:

In the United States, there is an epidemic of cancer of the thyroid and the breasts. I think the connection between these two illnesses is iodine deficiency. Iodine helps to maintain the normal architecture of endocrine tissues including the thyroid, ovaries, uterus, breasts, and prostate.
Inadequate iodine levels are known to predispose these tissues to abnormal growths, starting with cysts and ending with cancer. Iodine has been shown to reverse this abnormal architecture of these tissues.

I don’t think iodine deficiency is the only cause of the endocrine cancer epidemic we are experiencing. X-rays will also increase your cancer risk. Every mammogram leads to a 1 percent increased risk of breast cancer. Therefore, after 10 years of mammograms, your risk may increase by as much as 10 percent.

Other reasons include our exposure to chemicals (bromide, fluoride, and chlorine) that all cause iodine to be released from the body. Most pesticides and herbicides contain these chemicals.

What is the solution? Ensure that your body has optimal iodine levels and minimize your exposure to toxic chemicals like pesticides and herbicides. More information about this can be found in my book, Iodine: Why You need It, Why You Can’t Live Without It.
