Influenza season is here again, which means that it is time to meet your physician for the seasonal flu shot. Only, no one really likes injections, especially when there is no guarantee that the disease-preventive flu shot will really ward off the condition of influenza.
Is there any way to prevent getting the disease without taking the flu vaccine?
Well, here is good news – you can avoid influenza and the flu shots by following a few simple steps.
Step 1: Boost your immune system by improving your diet. Increase your intake of green leafy vegetables and citrus-based fruits that contain antioxidants and vitamins like A, B6, C and E in large amounts. These natural compounds are vital for boosting the immune system and help the body to fight off incipient infections such as influenza, neatly circumventing the flu vaccine.
Step 2: Use supplements to strengthen your body’s natural immune systems. Nutraceuticals and herbs like echinacea, zinc, elderberry and garlic offer great health benefits. They can ward off influenza and even help to reduce the symptoms of active flu without resort to flu shots.
Step 3: Clean your hands for 15 seconds. Washing your hands with warm water, antibacterial soap, and alcohol-based hand cleaners is the best way to kill any flu viruses that may spread the disease condition from your hands. At the same time, avoid touching your nose, eyes, and mouth during the condition of influenza being present around you as the flu virus spreads rapidly through physical contact.
Step 4: Avoid crowded areas. Although this might not be possible for everyone but do try to avoid crowded areas, especially during conditions of peak travel. If you do have to travel or if your workplace or home is crowded, wear surgical-grade mouth masks and keep a safe distance from people who appear to be suffering from influenza – they may appear nauseous, feverish or sick.
Step 5: Increase your exercise. Working out or exercising for 20 minutes daily can boost your immune system more than any flu shots by improving blood flow and helping the body to fight off the flu virus. However, if you already feel sick, stay at home as your body will need rest to ward off incipient influenza.
Step 6: Quit smoking as smokers get more flu infection compared to nonsmokers. Smoking weakens the respiratory and immune systems, a condition which causes more severe flu infection with a higher risk of complications. Avoiding alcohol for a few days is also a good idea as it too affects the immune system.
Step 7: Take plenty of rest and reduce stress. Stress weakens the immune system, and a weakened physical condition can make you fall sick much faster. Getting enough sleep and reducing stress can definitely help prevent diseases such as influenza.
These simple lifestyle changes are very easy to implement. A better diet, increased exercise, and supplements will generally strengthen your body’s immune system and prevent you from falling sick, helping you avoid influenza and the flu vaccine.
