5 Supplements You Don't Know About (But Probably Need)

We all know that it's important to get the key vitamins and minerals that are in most multivitamin formulations. These are vitamins A, B complex, C, D, E, and the minerals magnesium, zinc, selenium, among others.
But most folks don't realize that there are a handful of key, little-known supplements that can vastly improve health in many people.
"In addition to common vitamins such as vitamin B and C, there are many other nutrients our bodies need in order to thrive at optimum levels," says Dr. Ellen Kamhi, author of "The Natural Medicine Chest."

GMO Foods: It's Worse Than We Thought...

Here are five little-known supplements that should be a staple in medicine chests. Since individual needs vary, check with your healthcare professional or read labeling information carefully for proper dosage.
Quercetin: This is a naturally occurring bioflavonoid that helps the body absorb vitamin C and is found in many plants. As a bioflavonoid, it has powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and has been used by alternative practitioners for years to treat arthritis, autoimmune diseases, asthma, and cataracts. Quercetin blocks inflammation that can lead to leaky gut syndrome. "It is one of nature's most perfect medicines," Dr. Kamhi tells Newsmax Health.
Glutamine: This amino acid is an extremely important nutrient that has been shown to support intestinal and overall health. Glutamine removes unwanted bacteria and ammonia from the body. It also eases inflammatory bowel disease because it protects the lining of the gastrointestinal tract.
Glutathione: This essential protein contains three amino acids and acts as a scavenger for free radicals and toxins that damage and destroy cells. It also regulates the activity of other antioxidants such as vitamins A, C, and E. When the body is overrun with free radicals, known as oxidative stress, our supply of glutathione can become severely depleted. This in turn can negatively affect the musculoskeletal, nervous, immune, and endocrine systems. Glutathione helps protect and cleanse the liver.
Curcumin: Jacob Teitelbaum, M.D., one of the nation's leading complementary medicine practitioners, tells Newsmax Health that this component of the common Indian and Asian spice turmeric has significant cancer-fighting effects and eases chronic pain. "Curcumin is especially effective against arthritis pain," says Dr. Teitelbaum, author of the bestselling book, "Real Cause, Real Cure." Curcumin has also been associated with a 70 percent lower risk of Alzheimer's disease and been shown to be a potent antidepressant.
Strontium: Dr. Teitelbaum says this mineral has been provent to be 170 percent more effective than the prescription drug Fosamax at preventing osteoporotic fractures. It safely builds bone density.
