Mom Says She Was Forced to Have C-Section

Friday, 06 Jun 2014 02:34 PM

A woman says she was forced to have a C-section against her will at Staten Island University Hospital, the Daily Beast reports.

The experience of Rinat Dray highlights the violation of women's rights when medical and legal authorities pit mother against fetus, women's health experts contend.

Hours before Rinat Dray gave birth, she reportedly got involved in a dispute with her OB-GYN, Leonid Gorelik, M.D. He had threatened to stop examining her if she continued to refuse a cesarean section, she said.

“He was pressing me hard. He put the glove on to see how dilated I am,” she said, recalling her July 26, 2011, delivery. “He took it out and then he said, ‘I’m not going to check you unless you sign for the C-section.’”

After two previous C-sections, Dray said she wanted to avoid such a procedure with her third pregnancy, and she felt she and her baby were OK. She had chosen Staten Island University Hospital precisely because of their relatively low C-section rates, she said.

Dray said she never consented to the C-section, but it was performed anyway and her bladder was perforated during her surgery.
