Top 3 Supplements for Enhancing the Mind

Thursday, 06 Dec 2012 02:51 PM

Mental deterioration does NOT have to be part of getting older, a top doctor says. Taking certain nutritional supplements can keep your memory strong and your brain sharp into your 60s, 70s, and beyond, says Jacob Teitelbaum, M.D.
“Think of your brain like a car. You need to have a good motor and you need oil to keep it lubricated. There are certain supplements that are like oil in a car. They keep your brain running smoothly,” says Dr. Teitelbaum, author of the bestselling book, "Real Cause, Real Cure: The 9 Root Causes of the Most Common Health Problems and How to Solve Them." “Once people start taking these supplements, they feel wonderful and they discover it makes a great difference.”
Here are his top three supplements to keep your brain sharp.
1. Vitamin B Complex. Take 50 mg of B-complex daily. It is critical to the brain’s energy centers, giving it the fuel to work and enhancing mental functioning. Vitamin B-complex is comprised of all of the important B vitamins, including B1, B2, niacin (B3), B6, biotin, folic acid, and vitamin B12.

2. Omega-3 Fish Oil. Omega-3 fish oil is made up of two essential fatty acids (EFAs): DHA and EPA. EPA decreases inflammation and helps mood, and DHA is a key oil that is a component in the structure of your brain, which is why fish is called “brain food.” The best way to boost your intake of these crucial fatty acids is to eat three to four servings a week of cold-water fish – salmon and tuna are examples. Another way is to take fish oil supplements. But beware: Most fish oil supplements are labeled “Omega-3s,” but only a small fraction of them are the two vital EFAs. Make sure your supplement has guaranteed DHA and EPA content.
3. Curcumin Supplements. Curcumin is the main substance in turmeric, one of the spices that give Indian food its color and flavor. Used in Indian medicine for generations, curcumin has been linked to a number of health benefits, including potentially warding off Alzheimer’s disease. “In areas of India where they use a lot of turmeric, the incidence of Alzheimer’s disease is decreased by two-thirds compared to the U.S.,” says Dr. Teitelbaum. He recommends a one-daily curcumin supplement using the BCM-95 form, which is more readily absorbed and needs to be taken only once daily.
In addition to these three brain-enhancing supplements, Dr. Teitelbaum says many people are also helped by taking 200 mgs of magnesium and 200 micrograms of iodine daily.
