Drug-Free Help for COPD

After a crisis ends, many people say they can "breathe easy," but breathing isn't easy for more than 10 million Americans who suffer from chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD). Since it can be fatal, especially in the elderly, pneumonia is the lung disease that usually first comes to mind, but there are other lung diseases which slowly destroy lungs and leave their victims incapacitated.

The three most common disorders are asthma, chronic bronchitis, and emphysema. "All three can affect us at any age, even though chronic bronchitis and emphysema are more common as we get older," says neurosurgeon and natural health expert Dr. Russell Blaylock. "They can destroy our lungs and leave us crippled, but more importantly, the disorders can shorten our lives."

The basic cause of COPD is inflammation — a chronic low-level inflammation of the lungs and bronchioles (breathing pathways). In many cases, the cause of inflammation is smoking, but air pollution along with chemicals, pesticides, and herbicides are all known to trigger chronic inflammation in the lungs as well as other areas of the body. Infections, such as the common cold, are also known to cause immune responses that eventually destroy the lungs, says Dr. Blaylock, author of the Blaylock Wellness Report.
If you struggle with COPD, you can fight back. "As we learn more about COPD, the more it becomes obvious that a properly designed dietary and supplement program should slow the deterioration of the disease and possibly promote some healing," says Dr. Blaylock.
The keys are increasing energy to the lungs, and fighting the inflammation. Lung diseases use a lot of energy, and increasing energy to the lungs should improve breathing — shortness of breath and labored breathing being the most disturbing symptoms of COPD.

According to Dr. Blaylock, the following three supplements are among those that will increase the energy supply to lungs:
Acetyl-L-carnitine. Take two 500 mg capsules three times a day.
• R-alpha-lipoic acid. Take one 100 mg tablet with each meal.

• CoQ10 (ubiquinol). Take one 100 mg tablet three times a day.

"Reducing inflammation in the lungs and bronchioles is absolutely vital," says Dr. Blaylock. He says the following supplements are among those that reduce inflammation and are the safest:

• Curcumin and quercetin. Take 500 mg of each mixed with 1 tablespoon of extra-virgin olive oil (to help absorption) three times a day with meals.

• Resveratrol. Take 50 mg twice a day.

• EGCG. Take one 150 mg tablet three times a day.

• Vitamin C (as calcium or magnesium ascorbate). Take 1,000 mg three times a day.

• NAC (N-acetyl-L-cysteine). Take 500 mg twice daily.

• Vitamin E (as mixed tocopherols). Take 400 IU twice a day.

A diet rich in fruits and vegetables should be a priority. Avoid aspertame and other artificial sweeteners, fluoridated water, and all omega-6 oils, such as corn and canola.
In addition, watch your weight.

A new German study found that people who were obese, especially those with excess abdominal fat, were more likely to have COPD.
 Women with waist sizes of 43 inches or more and men whose waists were at least 46 inches were 72 percent more likely to have COPD.
