Should I Take Testosterone to Boost My Energy?

By Peter Hibberd, M.D.   |   Friday, 12 Jul 2013 06:12 PM

Question: I am in my 60s and am tired all the time. My wife thinks I have low testosterone. Should I go for a test?

Dr. Hibberd’s answer:
Fatigue is a catch-all symptom for numerous problems, both physical and emotional. When I evaluate patients for fatigue, a low testosterone level is very far down the probability list.
In other words, you should see your physician for a proper evaluation for your fatigue, to be sure it’s not caused by an underlying disorder, such as heart disease, endocrine problems such as diabetes or hypothyroidism, infection, inflammatory or cancer.
If potency issues are present, mention this also, but do not hang your hat on low testosterone as the cause of your fatigue, even if you have a low level of the hormone. Most patients with low testosterone do not have fatigue as their main complaint, so in a way your wife is right: It is time for a checkup for you. See your primary care or family physician for guidance.
