How Should I Treat My Digestive Problems?

By Peter Hibberd, M.D.   |

Question: What is the best way to treat diverticulitis?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

Diverticulosis is a genetic tendency to form small balloon-like pouches in the bowel. Sometimes these pouched areas become obstructed and create appendicitis-like infections.

But unlike appendicitis, these infections are usually managed with oral medications.

But when fever, or other immune-system problems exist, IV antibiotics are used along with pain relievers to reduce the risk of perforation or abscess formation outside of bowel. Once perforated, surgery is needed to resect and correct the perforation as a lifesaving measure, and sometimes a colostomy may be needed.

So you should never wait to see what happens, treat infections early, and follow a high-fiber diet that has been shown to reduce pressures in the bowel and stay healthy.

Diverticulitis can be controlled by eating a high-fiber diet and medicine, but serious complications require more involved procedures.
