How Can I Treat Macular Degeneration?

By Russell Blaylock, M.D,   |   Monday, 22 Apr 2013 09:34 AM

Question: I was recently diagnosed with a mild dry macular degeneration and have been advised to take vitamins. What is your advice for treatment?
Dr. Blaylock's Answer:
Traditional medicine has no treatment for dry macular degeneration, but there are supplements that can reduce the impact of the disease and slow its course or even reverse some of the damage. Astaxanthin, lycopene, bilberry extract, EGCG, and curcumin have all been shown to do this. These compounds enter the eye and protect the retina.
DHA supplements (1,000 mg a day) along with mixed tocopherols and mixed tocotrienols also add protection.
One should avoid all excitotoxin food additives, soy, high-meat diets, and omega-6 oils, and eat 5 to 10 servings of cruciferous vegetables a day.
