Phares: Iran Becoming 'Jihadist Soviet Union'

Iran is positioning itself to become a “jihadist Soviet Union” in the Middle East, says an expert on the region.

Dr. Walid Phares, of the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies, says Mahmoud Amadinejad, who was declared the winner of Iran's disputed presidential election, will also support the development of a nuclear bomb, Iraq's insurgency, Hezbollah, and Hamas.

When asked by Newsmax.TV to predict Iran's future in the aftermath of the election, Phares said:

“The clerical rule in Iran wants to transform the Islamic republic into a nuclear power – that's the most important thing to them.

“They want to exert power in Iraq, in the Shiite areas of Iraq, and through the alliance with the Syrian regime, reach Lebanon, where they have already Hezbollah deployed.

“With their petro dollars they have an alliance with Hamas and other groups in Gaza. And they are eyeing the Arabian peninsula.

“Basically, what the supreme ruler wants to transform into, is a jihadist Soviet Union in the region.

“Ahmadinejad … is going to be supporting the development of a nuclear bomb – let's make it very clear.”

Phares also said Iran's leader will continue to support Hezbollah and Hamas, as well as insurgency in Iraq, while trying to build relationships with radical elements in Saudi Arabia.

“This regime will waste America's time as long as possible, so that we begin our next cycle of elections. And they will try to waste another cycle – that's another four years. … That's eight years, basically, for them to become a nuclear power with nuclear missiles and ability to be invincible in the sense of what was the case in the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the United States.”
