MEXICO CITY — President Barack Obama says that when it comes to overhauling immigration, one of his goals is to eliminate the politics that doomed a previous attempt to revamp the system.
Obama says he favors a commonsense approach that will help people on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border.
A recent effort to improve the system failed after it became a victim of presidential politics.
Obama says he favors a system that will provide a more orderly process for immigrants who want to come to the United States, and a pathway to legalization for those already in the U.S.
He commented at a news conference in Mexico City after meeting with President Felipe Calderon.
