One Reporter’s Opinion – Impeachment Is Out of the Question

It is this reporter's opinion that the Constitution must be honored.

The Constitution states that George W. Bush and Dick Cheney will leave office on the 20th of January 2009 — no matter what happens!

No legal way exists for them to continue in office let alone assume some sort of position like dictator in the White House (simply because some supposed “emergency” has occurred).

That said, impeachment makes as much sense as letting them continue in office beyond their term.

But there are those who are shouting impeachment. For that, we turn to my good friend, Edwin Vieira Jr. He holds four degrees from Harvard, has practiced law for more than 30 years, and is an expert on constitutional issues.

Says Vieira, “First, forget the removal of President Bush and Vice President Cheney by impeachment for, and conviction of, high crimes and misdemeanors, as the Constitution provides ….”

To be sure, such action would prevent any future wrongdoing by these two individuals but neither would such action solve the country’s problems. Bush and Cheney are merely symptoms of America’s present difficulties.

In order to impeach Bush and Cheney, the Democrats would have to declare the administration’s actions — such as incursion into Iraq, the Patriot Act, the Military Commissions Act, and so on to be high crimes and misdemeanors.

Vieira says the Democrats don’t want to impeach Bush or Cheney. With them gone, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D – Calif., would become president and the Democrats would control both Congress and the executive branch going into the 2008 national elections.

Democrats want to let the Republicans stew in their own wrongdoing. Says Vieira, “America is in the grip of a … misrule by the very worst people: the avaricious, the ambitious, the amoral.”

America is in the grip of tyrannists who concern themselves with the advancement of special interests rather than the promotion of the general welfare. What benefit would be achieved by removing Bush and Cheney from office when replaced by Nancy Pelosi and whomever she selects as vice president?

Vieira says they cannot condemn the administration without also condemning themselves. This mob wants the statutes — unconstitutional as they might be, to remain on the books until the Democrats can employ them after January 2009, providing a guarantee to the people who would benefit from their corruption in the future.

The professor concludes “impeachment — never” by saying, “Democrats do not dare to expose, cross, or refuse to favor,” their continuing corruption.
