Depending on who does the math, Donald Trump is either worth a paltry $150 to $250 million, or billions and billions.
In court filings, Trump once estimated his net worth at north of $4 billion. It was part of a 2007 defamation suit against author Timothy O'Brien, who claimed in a 2005 book that Trump was at best just another multi-millionaire.
That $4 billion-plus, Trump said then, is "a very conservative number, in my opinion."
In a recent interview in The Wall Street Journal, Trump claims he is worth about $6 billion.
The Trump brand alone, said the real estate developer and TV reality show host, is worth $1 billion.
He did admit in the deposition, previously confidential and now a court document, that, "my net worth fluctuates, and it goes up and down with markets and with attitudes and with feelings, even my own feelings," said Trump, according to The Journal.
Still, despite a tough economy, Trump says, "We have a lot of cash right now. We're starting to buy things," he said.
Problems, nevertheless, persist in some condo developments bearing the Trump brand, including lagging sales, losses in property values, and debt.
Does Trump ever exaggerate the value of his holdings, he was asked in the deposition.
"I think everybody does. Who wouldn't?" he said. But Trump added that his inflations in non-financial public statements were, "not beyond reason."
As noted above, it all depends on who's doing the math. Deutsche Bank, for instance, calculated Trump's net worth at $788 million in 2005, the year O'Brien's book was published.
