Newsmax Media, an independent online news source, has been regularly increasing reader news consumption for its core audience of aged 45-plus men and women through social media.

For example Newsmax Facebook followers now total more than 318,000, up more than 200,000 in a year.

Newsmax is also showing increasing interest among Newsmax Twitter followers. Currently more than 40,000 Twitter users follow Newsmax.

But the small number tells just part of the story. Newsmax tweets are read by millions across a network of twitter users who follow and share Newsmax.

According to John Potter, Newsmax’s Social Media and Analytics Manager, the entire social media strategy is based on reaching out to their core demographic. “We really never went out for sheer numbers. It was always our goal to enter each social media channel and carve out our niche readership. We wanted to provide the best breaking political news to an audience that would interact with the content.”

In the professional world of Social Media, numbers of likes and follows don’t mean much anymore. The new metric that companies want to know about is engagement. Any social media marketing firm will tell you that .5% to 1% is considered good engagement. A study by Socialbakers.com done August 2013 shows Facebook pages that have between 100,000 and 499,000 fans have an average engagement rate of .45%.

“We never see below 1% for engagement with our posts. We average between 4%-5%, and I regularly see that number go as high as 9%. Our audience loves to interact with our posts and we spend time picking the content and writing the creative that will add to their engagement and experience,” said Mr. Potter.
