Premier: Greece Can't Remain at Mercy of Lenders

Tuesday, 02 Feb 2010 12:05 PM

Greece cannot be at the mercy of its lenders, the country's Prime minister said on Tuesday as Greece faces soaring borrowing costs.

"The country cannot remain at the mercy of its lenders and markets, it needs to be able to define its own course," Prime Minister George Papandreou told an economic conference.

After seeing bond yields soar last week as investors demanded a higher premium to hold Greek debt, Athens won some respite this week.

The spread between Greek and German 10-year bonds stood at 344 basis points in early trading on Tuesday.
