FT Names Apple's Steve Jobs Person of the Year

Meet Steve Jobs, The Financial Times selection as Person of the Year.

The head of Apple Computers wins by carrying his dream of bringing cool gadgets to the world often at a time when Wall Street and the industry had dismissed him.

Take the iPad, the apple of Jobs's eye.

The product is new but rules the roost in its genre, the tablet computer, which has been around for a decade now.

"The iPad is already turning out to be a different story," The Financial Times writes.

"Extending the iPhone’s innovations of a more versatile screen and lightweight 'apps' designed for specific tasks, it points to a future beyond the computer mouse – and a world without Windows."

"By deciding which apps are available in its online store, and setting the rules for how those apps are developed, Apple rules this new kingdom more closely than Microsoft ever ruled the PC."

In May, Apple shares were more expensive than those of Microsoft, according to The Financial Times.

Some Apple apps even have the awakening giant Facebook in its crosshairs.

“Steve’s the last of the great builders,” Roger McNamee, a Silicon Valley financier who tried to rebuild Palm in Apple’s image, tells The Financial Times.

“What makes him different is that he’s creating jobs and economic activity out of thin air while just about every other CEO in America is working out ways to cut costs and lay people off.”

More than 1 in 5 Americans own or plan to buy a tablet computer within the next three years, according to a November survey conducted by Harris Interactive and sponsored by Fuze Box.

"Since before the iPad launched in April, we’ve persisted that tablets would soon become a widely used business tool," Jeff Cavins, CEO of Fuze Box, says in a statement.

“With 2 in 5 tablet owners using their device for business by 2014, we have officially entered the post PC era.”
