Fed's Fisher: Bernanke Stance on Easing Is Consensus

Monday, 30 Apr 2012 05:50 PM

Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas President Richard Fisher said Chairman Ben S. Bernanke’s commitment to maintain accommodative policy represents the consensus of the Federal Open Market Committee.

“He’s reflecting the consensus of the group,” Fisher said in a Bloomberg TV interview Monday. “There are outliers -- I happen to be one of them by the way,” Fisher said, reiterating his opposition to additional easing.

“But the purpose is to have a full-throated discussion, he needs to broker that discussion, and then reflect, as he does so well, where the committee comes out,” said Fisher, who doesn’t vote on monetary policy this year.

The FOMC said in a statement last week that it expects to keep borrowing costs low through at least late 2014 to foster a job market recovery. Policy makers also upgraded their forecasts for growth, unemployment and inflation and said they expect the economy to “pick up gradually.”
