Census Bureau: 1 in 3 Americans in or Near Poverty

Monday, 21 Nov 2011 01:28 PM

A new measure of poverty released by the U.S. Census Bureau meant to better count disposable income shows that some 51 million Americans — one in three — are either living in poverty or just barely above it, The New York Times reports.

The new report shows 51 million Americans with incomes less than 50 percent above the poverty line, 76 percent more than the official account published in September.

All told, that places 100 million people — one in three Americans — either in poverty or in the highly worrisome place just above it.

The Census Bureau produced the analysis of the near poor — those who have a somewhat higher income than at or below the poverty line — at the request of The New York Times.

The size of the near-poor population took even the bureau’s number crunchers by surprise. “These numbers are higher than we anticipated,” said Trudi J. Renwick, the bureau’s chief poverty statistician. “There are more people struggling than the official numbers show.”

The national poverty rate stands at 15.3 percent and the unemployment rate is at 9 percent some two years after the recession that began in 2007 officially ended, Reuters reported.

The number of people living in poverty has reached an all-time high in the United States, despite the country's position as one of the wealthiest in the world. Its gross domestic product per capita of $47,184 was 3,095 percent more than India's $1,477 in 2010.

In 24 states and Washington, D.C., more than 20 percent of those up to 17 years old lived at or below the poverty threshold.

Meanwhile, the Poughkeepsie Journal reports that the amount of money distributed through the food-stamps program in July of this year was up 133 percent statewide compared to July 2007, the year the recession is said to have begun.
