Buffett, Welch Joyful Over bin Laden’s Death

Corporate titans Warren Buffett and Jack Welch are elated over the death of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden, just like other Americans.

"It felt good,” Buffet, CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, tells CNBC. “It was joy. My thoughts went back to 9/11."

Betting against the United States has been a mistake since 1776, he says. “We take our body blows from time to time, but this country always comes through.”

As for former General Electric CEO Welch, “it was a great thrill,” to hear the announcement of bin Laden’s death, he tells CNBC. “To see people reciting the pledge of allegiance at ground zero puts chills through your body.”

That reaction and Britain’s enthusiastic response to the royal wedding last week in the face of the country’s crushing economic woes show resiliency on both sides of the ocean, Welch says. “It’s a wonderful thing for people in the west to see this confidence. It’s an exciting moment for all of us.”

Not everyone sees bin Laden’s death as an unalloyed positive, however. Investment guru Dennis Gartman, publisher of the Gartman letter, says that while the killing was good, some of the results may not be.

“The death of Osama Bin Laden is in fact the triumph of good over evil, but we have now created a martyr,” he tells CNBC. So terrorists will be after us around the globe, though Gartman doesn’t foresee a major disaster.
