Idea: Save Syrian Economy By Destroying it First

By Patrick Watson   |   Wednesday, 04 Sep 2013 07:39 AM

Contrary to what we all expected last week, U.S. missiles are not yet striking Syria. President Obama decided Congress should first have a chance to express itself.

The White House will have difficulty convincing Congress. I think he should re-package the idea as an economic stimulus program. Syria is a chance to show the value of government intervention. The entire world will envy Syria's growth after we blow it to pieces.

This is not as crazy as it may sound. The U.S. government measures economic growth with a statistic called gross domestic product (GDP). GDP is simply the sum total of the goods and services a nation "produces." The exact nature of the production doesn't matter, as long as someone buys something.

Just last week, our own government told us that U.S. GDP rose 2.5 percent in the second quarter. Reliable data on the Syrian economy is scarce for some reason, but I think we can safely call it "struggling." The same is true elsewhere in the developing world.

Now imagine how many jobs we can create for Syria with just a few hundred Tomahawk missiles. Every building we destroy will need reconstruction, furnishing and decoration. This will give unemployed Syrians their choice of careers. Why join the rebels when you can make good money painting new minarets? Syria's GDP will explode higher.

You might argue replacement buildings are not really "production." This is not correct, as others in the region proved centuries ago. Egyptian pyramids supported countless workers. The pharaohs had amazing foresight.

The economy-destruction plan can easily help others, too. The U.S. Navy is in the area launching missiles anyway, so Obama can have them visit other depressed economies like Cyprus, Greece, Italy and Spain. Meanwhile the Pacific fleet can stimulate growth in China and Japan.

Some may object that charity begins at home. Not a problem — with so many major U.S. cities on both coastlines, the Navy can restore full employment to our domestic economy, too.

Inland cities beyond Tomahawk range (that's you, Denver) will give the Army and Air Force a chance to help.

Once Congress sees the potential, I feel sure they will grant Obama the approval he seeks. We have a chance to save the global economy by destroying it first. Let's not miss it.
