Hillary Clinton Would Make a Poor Investment Adviser

By    |   Friday, 14 Mar 2014 06:45 AM

When Russian troops entered Crimea, it became obvious that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had failed to reset relations with Russia. Her reset efforts had included a brightly colored button that could be pushed to wipe out the past and create a future filled with happiness.

In hindsight, the idea that global strategic problems could be wished away with a gimmick seems silly and naive. The silliness of the stunt was obvious to many realists when Clinton was pictured with the button.

In reality, geopolitical problems are resistant to easy solutions despite assurances from politicians.

Personal financial problems can also be difficult to address and investors should not expect easy solutions.

Resetting policy with Russia was based on the assumption that the past policy was wrong and it was time to try something new. Rather than presenting a serious policy, Clinton went for the hope that any change at all would be an improvement.

Recent events show that her hope was wrong and those events lead to serious questions about whether past policies for dealing with Russia needed any change at all.

Before making dramatic changes to their investments, individual investors should ask three simple questions that Secretary Clinton never gave us answers to:

1. Is what you've done in the past truly broken or is it just suffering a short-term setback?

2. Is the proposed change more likely to provide the desired results than the current plan is?

3. If the new plan proves to be worse than expected, what alternatives will you pursue?

It isn't often we can draw investment lessons from mistakes of high-ranking government officials. But by acting with more caution than Clinton did, individual investors can avoid resetting their plans on a whim.
