Wal-Mart Employees Lose Right to Choose Under Obamacare

By    |   Wednesday, 14 Nov 2012 07:39 AM

When Wal-Mart increased health insurance premiums by $8.40 a month or more, some workers decided the cost was no longer something they could fit into their budgets. Reuters recently profiled several workers who were dropping coverage because they felt they couldn’t afford the premiums.

In the article, the premiums cited would have amounted to about 1 percent to 3.5 percent of an employee’s income. Under Obamacare, these same employees will not have a choice. They will pay for the insurance or face a tax penalty of up to 2.5 percent of their income.

This might be one of the many overlooked problems many people face under Obamacare.

One employee told the wire service, "Sixty dollars isn't a lot to some people, but when I have to think about buying winter clothes for my kids or sending my daughter to college I have to think of what is best for my children."

Under Obamacare, she will no longer have the right to choose what is best for her children because she will be required to spend money on health insurance or face tax penalties. Either way, this employee will have less discretionary income.

Young workers and young families will face the greatest burden as they will lose a larger share of discretionary income than high-wage families will.

Unless the new law has repealed the fundamental economic laws of supply and demand, the Wal-Mart workers and everyone else with a job in America will be paying for free healthcare. Without realizing it, many have given up some of their freedom to choose how best to spend their money.
