Official: US, Colombia Reach Deal on Trade Pact

Wednesday, 06 Apr 2011 11:30 AM

A senior administration official says the U.S. and Colombia have reached a deal on a key free trade agreement.

The official says the deal will increase U.S. exports to Colombia by more than $1 billion per year and support thousands of American jobs.

The agreement came together after Colombia agreed to increased protections of workers' rights. The U.S. had held up the agreement in part because of concerns over violence in Colombia against labor union members.

The official says Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos will meet with Obama in Washington Thursday. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because the deal has not been officially announced.
