Santorum Says Iowa Caucuses Ended in Virtual Tie

Surging presidential contender Rick Santorum says no matter what the verified numbers in Iowa show, the results will be the same — the former Pennsylvania governor and rival Mitt Romney ended the contests in a virtual tie. There were reports Thursday night that numbers coming out of the Iowa caucuses might be slightly wrong, but Santorum told Fox News’ Greta Van Susteren it doesn’t matter.

”Here’s what I know — having talked to the chairman Matt Strawn, who is the chairman of the Republican Party of Iowa — that all these counties are going to be reporting in,” Santorum said “They’re going to be certifying . . . that there was one county where there was a 20-vote mistake in my favor — but there was a 21-vote mistake in Romney's favor — so it actually netted out to what I understand is a one-vote difference.

“But that doesn’t really matter to me — I mean . . . this was a tie,” he said. “And we came from, you know, 4 or 5 points two weeks before the election and ended up with 25 points. So I look at it this way: Let’s see what the polls look like in New Hampshire here by the end of the week.”

Van Susteren asked Santorum whether reports that his campaign had netted $2 million in the 48 hours following the Iowa caucuses were true.

“All I know is online that we’ve gotten about $1.5 million — so I don’t know what we’ve been able to pick up in other places, and you know, checks delivered in the mail and things like that,” Santorum said. “But I know we’ve had a very robust couple of days.”

Santorum also said he was not concerned that his numbers are lagging behind Romney’s in New Hampshire, which holds its primary on Jan. 10, because he was also far behind when he started campaigning in Iowa.

“Yes, I’m not worried about it,” he said. “A lot of those polls were taken before Iowa.”
