Facebook Growth Slows For Second Consecutive Month

Monday, 13 Jun 2011 12:47 PM

The number of people using the Facebook social networking site is growing although at a slower pace in May, the guardian.co.uk reports.
In the United States, the site lost about 6 million users, falling to 149.4 million by the end of May from 155.2 million at the start of the month.

Canada fell by 1.52 million to 16.6 million and the United Kingdom, Norway and Russia all saw falls of more than 100,000 users.

That doesn't mean that droves people are deactivating their accounts, it largely means that the site has hit a limit in those markets and cannot add as many people.

Overall, Facebook added 11.8 million users in May, down from 13.9 million in April and lower than the 20 million typically added each month over the past year that took the site to 687 million "monthly active" users, who log in at least once a month.

"By the time Facebook reaches around 50 percent of the total population in a given country (plus or minus, depending on internet access rates in that country), growth generally slows to a halt," says Eric Eldon of Inside Facebook, which tracks the site.

"So far, Facebook has been able to make up stalls and losses with big gains in heavily populated developing countries like Mexico, Brazil, India and Indonesia."

The financial community is wondering if and when the site goes public.

"It's a process that all companies go through. It's an inevitable process for us, the next thing that happens," Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg says, according to Reuters.

"People used to ask us if we were going to get sold. People have stopped asking that question — we're not ... No one is buying us, we're going public."
