Bachmann: Improving Economy 'Won't Take That Long'

Friday, 05 Aug 2011 03:57 PM

Republican congresswoman Michele Bachmann says that if she's elected president "it won't take that long" for her to turn around the ailing economy.

Speaking to reporters ahead of next week's straw poll in Iowa, Bachmann says the economy would start to improve shortly after she becomes president if signals are sent to the marketplace that remove uncertainty about taxes, regulation and the nation's debt.

Bachmann said Friday a report that 117,000 jobs were created last month shows that the economy remains weak. She says this week's stock market plunge is proof that an agreement to raise the nation's debt ceiling was, in her words, "a stinky deal."

Tim Pawlenty and other candidates for the Republican nomination for president also are campaigning in Iowa ahead of the Aug. 13 straw poll.
