Monster US Online Jobs Index Rises for Sixth Straight Month

A monthly gauge of online labor demand in the United States grew 21 percent in July from its position a year ago, marking the sixth straight month of annual growth, a private research group said on Thursday.

Monster Worldwide Inc., an online careers and recruiting firm, said its employment index rose to 138 points in July from 114 points during the year-earlier month. The index was down from 141 points in June.

Monster said its index of intent to hire, based on online job postings, had fallen from June to July every year since 2003. It attributed the fact to a routine summer hiring dip.

"The fact that hiring is more robust than a year ago points to a general improvement in the nation's hiring conditions as the economy continues its slow but steady recovery," said Jesse Harriott, a vice president at Monster.

"The Monster Employment Index monthly contraction in July was in line with seasonal expectations considering the summer months tend to be a slower period for recruitment activity," he said.

The Monster data precedes the U.S. government's monthly jobs report on Friday which is expected to show nonfarm payrolls fell for a second-straight month in July, reflecting the unwinding of census hiring.

Online recruitment activity in eight of the 20 industries monitored by the Monster index grew from June to July, while in 18 industries there was growth since July 2009, Monster said.

From June to July, part-time and contract jobs saw an increase in demand, while real estate remained the index's weakest sector, Monster said.

Mining, transportation and warehousing led all industries in year-to-year growth, followed by utilities, and professional, scientific, and technical services, Monster said.

The Monster Employment index is a monthly analysis based on a selection of corporate career sites and job boards. The margin of error is approximately plus or minus 1 percent.
