Italian Auction Shows Signs of Weakness as Bunds Rise

Friday, 13 Aug 2010 01:30 PM

Bund futures shed losses to hit a session high on Friday after markets found signs of weakness in an Italian bond auction result, adding to jitters about the health of the eurozone periphery.

Bund futures climbed to 131.31, up 9 ticks on the day after spending most of the session in negative territory.

"It's a combination of stocks moving a bit south and the Italy auctions. The five-year went okay but the 15-year wasn't the best and it's traded a bit heavy since. That's helped drag the rest of the periphery," a bond trader said.

Greek, Spanish and Italian debt underperformed German paper after the auction causing yield spreads against Bunds to widen.

The 10-year Italian/German spread widened by 6 basis points to 148 bps, the equivalent Spanish spread reached its widest since July 19 at 172 bps and Greek bonds hit 824 bps, the highest since late June.
