German Machinery Orders Soar in June

Monday, 02 Aug 2010 09:17 AM

A group representing Germany's machinery industry says orders rose 62 percent on the year in June — the latest of several strong increases — as the global economy improved.

The VDMA group said Monday orders from abroad were up 60 percent and orders from inside Germany rose 67 percent.

VDMA manager Hannes Hesse cautioned that such increases are due partly to "an extremely low previous-year basis" but said they are also a sign of "dynamic development."

Orders for the whole first half were up 32 percent from a year earlier — with foreign demand up 34 percent and domestic orders rising 27 percent.

Figures being released next week are expected to show that Germany's economy — Europe's biggest — posted strong second-quarter growth.
