Take the Terror Out of Taxation

Our tax system terrorizes everyone in the United States.

You know the feeling you get when you receive any sort of letter from the IRS. The first reaction is always one of fear. Letters from the IRS strike dread into the heart of even the most powerful people, as well as the least powerful.

The tax laws govern every aspect of our lives and behavior — from the moment we wake up until we finally go to sleep. Where we live, how we dress, how we earn a living, whether we get married and have children, what we eat — every aspect of our lives are impacted and thereby dictated by the income tax code.

The current income tax system was never adopted to be an efficient means for the government to raise money. It was passed in 1913 as a blatant populist appeal to get re-election votes.

Since then, the income tax system has become the primary mechanism used by our government to control us.

And it has devastating effects when ruthlessly used as a weapon of the politics of power.

The income tax system is enforced by coercion, suppression, intrusion and oppression. It has turned our Constitutional protections on their head by making the taxpayer presumptively guilty and proving innocence.

God forbid, we should not to get a receipt that can prove to the government how we spent our own money. For the government, it is not our money but their money. They classify our spending our own money as a tax expenditure.

It's sick. The threat of a tax audit is backed up by the fear that the tiniest mistake could send you to jail.

This is a tax system where not even death is an escape.

What should be the tax system that funds the government?

How about one that doesn't terrorize the taxpayers.

Clearly, a tax system that allows for compliance as well as administration to be easy for all taxpayers (and the IRS) would be fair.

All the political talk about lowering or raising marginal rates, raising or lowering deductions and increasing or decreasing entitlements or other governmental largesse is merely camouflage for what is really going on. That is, politicians using the tax system to line up more campaign contributions or buy special interests' block voting.

What tax system would work without being a horror?

I had coffee and bagels with my Sunday morning breakfast group. When we paid the check it included the tax. No one blinked an eye.

Nope, didn't even think about it.

What's the lesson to be learned?

It's this: The single most important goal of any income tax reform, which is the priority of all the priorities, should be to have a tax system that takes the terror out of paying taxes.
