Ted Kennedy FBI Files To Be Released

Monday, 12 Apr 2010 02:07 PM

The FBI is giving the family of the late Sen. Ted Kennedy the rare privilege of previewing their files on the lawmaker before they release them to the public.

The files are being released after media requests under the Freedom of Information Act, and some journalists are already anticipating embarrassing, tabloid material in the 3,000 pages, according to the Boston Globe.

The FBI is ready to make 3,000 of those pages public, but before they do, the Kennedy family will see them first.

The Kennedy's don't have the legal power to block the release of some of the material, but they can request information be withheld if it violates their privacy interests.

Included in the files could be significant unreported pieces of information about Chappaquiddick, as well as information about attempts on his life.

Family members will have the chance to make their case if they feel some of the previously classified information violates the privacy rights of the senator's surviving relatives. This type of secret file review being granted to the Kennedys is rare, according to the Globe, but not only reserved for high-profile individuals.
