GM to Invest $109 Million in Two Michigan Plants

Friday, 13 May 2011 01:54 PM

General Motors said Friday it will invest $109 million in two plants in Michigan and "create or retain" 96 jobs as part of an ongoing investment program to ramp up production as the No. 1 U.S. automaker moves into recovery mode.

GM said the investments at its Flint engine plant and its Bay City components plant will be focused on making more 1.4 liter engines to meet growing demand for popular small cars like the Chevrolet Cruze.

The company said $84 million would go to Flint and $25 million to the Bay City plant.

Earlier this week GM said it would invest about $2 billion in 17 U.S. plants over the next few years that would "create or preserve" more than 4,000 jobs as it retools the plants in eight states.

At no point has GM made it clear how many new jobs would actually be created as a result of these investments, as opposed to simply providing work for existing workers.

GM officials did not disclose the timeline for the investments or say which other plants would be upgraded.

Executives have recently signaled that GM's focus on building cars would grow, as shown by last week's announcement to invest $131 million revamping the Bowling Green, Kentucky, factory for a new version of the iconic Chevrolet Corvette sports car. The Kentucky announcement is part of the $2 billion plan.

GM said Monday it will invest $204 million at a Toledo, Ohio, engine plant and retain about 250 jobs so the plant can make a new eight-speed automatic transmission toward the end of 2012.
