American Fares Return to Orbitz After Contract Dispute

Friday, 29 Aug 2014 05:35 PM

American Airlines Group Inc. returned its flight schedules and fares to Orbitz Worldwide Inc. after the carrier and the online reservation service reached a contract agreement. Shares of Orbitz rose.

Consumers should be able to see all available flights from American immediately, Chicago-based Orbitz said Friday in a statement. The change primarily affects Orbitz.com and Cheaptickets.com. Corporate clients using Orbitz for Business to book travel were not affected.

American, the world’s largest airline, pulled its data from Orbitz on Aug. 26 after failing to negotiate a distribution contract. It had planned to also remove information on merger partner US Airways’ flights on Sept. 1, when its existing accord expired.

Orbitz rose 3.4 percent to $8.21 at the close in New York. Shares of Fort Worth, Texas-based American fell 0.7 percent to $38.88.

Orbitz, which had been listing American flights and fares without a contract, depends more on U.S. airline ticket sales than other online travel services such as Expedia Inc. and Priceline Group Inc., according to Manish Hemrajani, an Oppenheimer & Co. analyst.

American also withdrew data from Orbitz in a 2010 dispute, and the companies in April 2013 settled a legal disagreement over competing systems to provide fare and flight schedule data to online reservation systems.
