UK Telegraph: US Is Now an ‘Old World Country’

It’s not enough that our own politicians liken the United States to a European-style socialist country, now pundits across the pond are linking our country with the old-boy ways of Europe, calling us an “old world country,” declared The Telegraph newspaper.

“The United States is now officially one of us: an Old World country complete with class hatred, ethnic Balkanisation, bourgeois guilt and a paternalist ruling elite. And it is locked into the same death spiral of high public spending and self-defeating wealth redistribution as we are,” Janet Daley of the U.K.-based Telegraph wrote.

“Welcome to the future, and the beginning of what may turn out to be the terminal decline of the West.”

While Congress and President Barack Obama wrestle over issues like big government, entitlement programs and other issues that divide the country into red and blue states, America’s historic marker as a land of opportunity for all immigrants and people from all strata of society has been called into question. Americans increasingly seemed to vote along ethnic and racial lines, as 93 percent of black voters went for Obama as did 71 percent of Latinos and 73 percent of Asians.

Daley noted that wealthy families do not make their children work to earn a living and make their own path.

“So there is a whole tranche of adults in the United States now who will never work for a living: an idea that would once have been virtually unthinkable,” she wrote.

“With unearned wealth comes guilt and from that comes paternalism: the idea that you are obliged to elect a government that will take responsibility for all those people who are worse off than you — and not just by providing them with opportunities to better themselves in the traditional American way,” she noted.

The biggest complaint tough, is the sense that American government, Obama’s government, believes in penalizing the wealthy and evening the playing field by expanding entitlement programs, and that’s a miscalculation that we need to avoid.

“This is precisely the model — the Gordon Brown vision of government as omnipotent benefactor and purveyor of ‘social justice’ — from which we in Britain are attempting to escape, and in which the EU is still hopelessly trapped,” Daley wrote, referring to the former U.K. Prime Minister.

“But it should run deeply against all the traditional American values of ferocious self-reliance and personal aspiration.”
