A Russian entrepreneur who is wanted in a kidnapping and extortion case was arrested in London earlier this week, Russia's Foreign Ministry said Thursday.

Yevgeny Chichvarkin, the co-founder of major mobile phone retailer Yevroset, was arrested in London on Monday, Foreign Ministry spokesman Andrei Nesterenko said. He was later released on bail.

Chichvarkin is known in Russia for his outspoken statements against corruption in Russian police forces, and his eccentric dress style that includes colorful jackets, worn out jeans and elaborate scarves.

In March, Russia requested that Interpol put Chichvarkin on its international wanted list. A London court said Chichvarkin was set free on conditional bail Monday and will next be in court Sept. 22.

In January, a Russian court ordered the arrest of Chichvarkin. Local media had widely reported that he and his wife left for Britain in December.

The arrest follows a criminal case against Chichvarkin's colleagues in Yevroset, who are accused of kidnapping Yevroset's shipping agent and extorting money from him.

The prosecutors insisted that Chichvarkin, then head of the company, profited from those actions and therefore should face prosecution.
