Toyota Sales Drop 9 Percent After Recalls

Tuesday, 02 Mar 2010 01:16 PM

Toyota says its U.S. sales fell 9 percent in February, reflecting the fallout from widespread recalls and a temporary sales halt.

February was the first full month since Toyota's Jan. 26 decision to stop selling eight models, including its top-selling Camry and Corolla sedans, because of concerns over unintended acceleration.

Those cars have been put on sale as dealers repair them, but Toyota's image has suffered. The Japanese automaker has recalled 8.5 million vehicles worldwide since last fall over sticky gas pedals, faulty floor mats and glitches in braking software.

Toyota says Camry sales fell nearly 20 percent, while Corolla sales dropped 6 percent. Sales of the Prius hybrid rose 10 percent.
