Wisconsin gun laws have become increasingly permissive in recent years. As gun rights advocates celebrate the increased Second Amendment freedoms, others debate safety issues. Recent elections brought out national support for both sides.

Here are some quotes from Wisconsin media from the heated debate:

ALERT: Should Obama Have More Control Over Guns? Vote Now

“People have the right to self-defense and there are so many people that don’t realize that carrying a weapon is legal in Wisconsin … I’ve had 10 encounters with the police in the last year. The more I do it the less I get stopped, at least locally.”
Bill Polster of Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin, in explaining why he carried his AK-47, a Glock, and a Ruger LCP pistol to an appearance of the state’s first lady Tonette Walker

“I think that this issue is critical for both Democrats and Republicans because lives are at stake. If we can get rid of the notion that this is a politically divisive issue and really focus on the outcome, saving lives, that we want then I think that Republicans have just as much of a reason to work on this as Democrats.”
Jeri Bonavia, executive director of Wisconsin Anti-Violence Effort, explaining why stronger Wisconsin gun laws are needed

VOTE NOW: Should All Fully Automatic Rifles Be Banned?

“Bad people can and do have access to instruments that they can use in crime, whether it’s a firearm or anything else. They don’t worry about doing things legally … The problem isn’t the firearms, it’s the criminals.”
Jeff Nass, executive director of Wisconsin State NRA’s WI-Force

“Nearly a quarter-million people in Wisconsin have applied for and received their concealed carry license. Should they forget to unload their gun and put it in a case before they so much as drive onto a school driveway in their own car to pick up their kids from the school — that’s pretty offensive that they could potentially be charged with a felony.”
Nik Clark, president of Wisconsin Carry, on why the group plans to push for new Wisconsin gun laws that would allow concealed carry permit owners to carry on school property

“With officers laid off and furloughed, simply calling 911 and waiting is no longer your best option. You could beg for mercy from a violent criminal, hide under the bed, or you can fight back. But are you prepared? Consider taking a certified safety course in handling of firearms, so you can defend yourself until we get there. You have a duty to protect yourself and your family. We’re partners now. Can I count on you?”
Sheriff David Clarke of Milwaukee County, urging Milwaukee residents to arm themselves for self-defense.
