1. Black Bear
Every licensed hunter can take only one bear per calendar year, and no bait can be used in bear hunting, according to the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department. Dogs may accompany the hunt with a permit. Bears are found in every part of Vermont except for the Champlain Islands, so hunters have a lot of choices when it comes to where they want to try and nab their allotted bear.

The season starts at the beginning of September and lasts through mid-November, with a bonus late season at the end of November.

2. Moose
Moose have two open seasons: an archery season in the beginning of October and a regular season in late October. Several hundred permits are given at random in a lottery system. To entice hunters to continue to enter the lottery, those who aren't selected may accumulate an additional chance to win the lottery, the Wildlife and Parks Department said.

Restrictions are in place regarding which weapons can be used, and the hunting party cannot exceed three hunters.

3. Turkey
Early October means turkey bow and arrow season opens, lasting through most of the month. The end of October gives hunters the choice between hunting with a shotgun or hunting with a bow and arrow.

Vermont has a population of about 50,000 wild turkeys and an average of about 17,000 licenses sold annually, according to RealTree. The success rate for hunting turkey in Vermont is 30 percent.
