Luxury travelers are shaping the industry with a growing demand for unique, authentic, and meaningful experiences.

1. Personalized experiences — One of the hottest trends in luxury travel is creating highly personalized adventures, Travel Weekly noted. Daniel Fraser of Bangkok-based Smiling Albino said tailoring experiences to individual travelers may include such out-of-the-ordinary elements as celebrating a birthday by watching elephants enjoy a giant fruit buffet or taking a motorcycle trip to northern Vietnam.

2. Local connections — Luxury travelers want to be immersed in the location, including interacting with local residents, Travel Market Report noted. They also want to experience an authentic sense of place without foregoing modern conveniences.

3. Large groups — Affluent millennials like to travel in groups of friends and family and seek spaces that can accommodate large gatherings, with spacious dining and living areas, multiple bathrooms, and outdoor space, Cathy Ross, CEO of Exclusive Resorts, said in an interview with Forbes magazine. They like itineraries that can be customized to individual preferences.

4. Working vacations — The ability to combine business and leisure is a rising trend among some luxury travelers, World Travel Market noted, dubbing the trend "bleisure." Some travelers are making the most of business trips by exploring the local area, bringing family members along, and tacking on vacation days to extend their trips past the duration of their work obligations.

5. Technology — Luxury travelers are increasingly using mobile technology to stay on top of their travel plans, booking reservations and changing itineraries while on the go, World Travel Market said.

6. Endangered locations — Luxury travelers also are putting changing geographic settings on their bucket lists, World Travel Market said. As an example, the publication pointed to Maldives, a popular resort destination that is the lowest-lying country on earth at risk of being engulfed is sea levels rise.
