Tornado Safety: Every Safe Room Should Have These on Hand

By    |   Friday, 15 Jul 2016 04:34 PM

A safe room is a place that provides safety from tornadoes, especially in areas that are prone to the violent storms. Although certain regions have a higher risk of tornado development, a tornado can strike anywhere.

The safest areas for protection include the basement or somewhere without windows on the first floor of the home. If the home doesn't have a good safe room, homeowners can consider building an addition that would give the family easy access to a safe place.

Other areas that offer shelter and safety from a tornado include the bathroom, hallways, under the stairs, and in closets.

An adequate safe room should have no windows and be out of an area subject to storm surges and flooding. FEMA provides information on building safe rooms.

A safe room is a great place to start when thinking about tornado safety, but here are a few items you should keep in it:

• An NOAA weather radio or battery-powered radio tuned to emergency information keeps people informed about tornado watches and warnings. A tornado watch indicates a tornado is possible in or near your area while a tornado warning means a tornado has been sighted.

• Batteries should be kept in a secure place in the safe room for radios if there is a power outage.

• Battery-powered flashlights come in handy during a storm and when examining the home for any damage afterward. Candles are not advised due to fire risk.

• Keep tools in a toolbox for use in making quick repairs if necessary.

• Blankets provide comfort and security during and after a tornado.

• Have a necessary supply of water and food for the safe room.

• Medications for family members who require certain prescribed drugs should be stored ahead of time.

• Keep sturdy shoes, long pants, and long-sleeved shirts in the safe room to use during an examination of possible damage to walls, doors, and windows in the home.
